After-the-fact post for the train trip / Junamatkan jälkipostaus

I thought I'd write one more piece about the train trip, even though it's four years since that trip, and I've since done at least five similar business trips through Europe with trains (special mention goes to the Bulgaria trip for how nice it was), and I don't even have any pictures left of the latter half of the trip. It's because I was busy when I got there, so there was no time to write or publish anything, and after a while, I lost the phone where the pictures were and I didn't have any backups.

But the rest of the journey was lots of fun! I remember the following things fondly, categorised by the place they happened in:

Paris:

• Homeless people sleeping on streets, some of whom were still celebrating among other people the (then first) victory of Emmanuel Macron over Marine Le Pen.
• The general party feeling caused by the fact that France had evaded becoming a nazi state.
• A restaurant owner who granted me discount for buying food there for one young guy who came to me begging for some kind of help.
• The groups of old farts playing petanque in parks. And in general the attitude that this is our land, and we are here to enjoy life (and to try to survive).

TGV train and Perpignan:

• All the crowd and noise. You could spend your time on the train whichever way you wanted, but every place was packed.
• How people slowly ceased to abide manners as they got more and more tired, and ended lying down in various places on the floor.
• The blazing heat in Perpignan, the lack of vegetation (in Spanish style), and street signs in Catalan.
• The nice creek where I went to swim while waiting for the bus to Barcelona. The train went over the creek by a bridge when it was nearing the station, so I walked back to the creek when I got off.
• The bus being three and half hours late and this info coming five minutes before the planned departure time.

The bus and Barcelona:

• Nice mountainous route, efficient highways. Very nice scenery from the windows.
• It was so hot even in the bus.
• Barcelona had a lot of nice vegan food available.

Ajattelin kirjoittaa vielä yhden junamatkakirjoituksen, vaikka tuosta liikematkasta on neljä vuotta, oon sen jälkeen tehnyt ainakin viisi vastaavaa työmatkaa Euroopan läpi junalla (erityisen kivana haluan mainita Bulgarian-matkan), eikä minulla ole enää edes kuvia jäljellä matkan loppupuolesta. Minulla oli nimittäin kiire tultuani perille, julkaiseminen jäi, ja jossain vaiheessa hukkasin sen kännykän jossa loput kuvat olivat eikä minulla ollut niistä varmuuskopioita.

Mutta matkan loppupuoli oli tosi kiva! Erityisesti mieleen jäivät seuraavat asiat, paikan mukaan lajiteltuina.

Pariisista:

• Pariisin kodittomat, kaduilla nukkuvat ihmiset, joista osa juhlisti muiden mukana sitä, että Macron oli (tuolloin ensimmäistä kertaa) saanut erävoiton Marine Le Pen'sta.
• Ylipäänsä se juhlahumu, kun kaikki olivat iloisia siitä, että Ranskasta ei ollut tullut natsivaltio.
• Ravintolanpitäjä, joka antoi minulle alennusta siksi, että ostin häneltä ruokaa yhdelle nuorelle jätkälle joka tuli kerjäämään minulta.
• Petankkia puistoissa pelaavat äijäporukat, ja ylipäänsä se kaikille yhteinen asenne, että tämä on meidän maamme ja me olemme täällä viihtymässä (ja yrittämässä selvitä hengissä).

TGV-junasta ja Perpignanista:

• Tungos ja hälinä. Junamatkalla sai olla miten halusi, mutta joka paikassa oli täyttä.
• Se, miten ihmiset väsymyksen hiipieessä pikku hiljaa lakkasivat noudattamasta käytösnormeja ja päätyivät kuka mihinkin lattialle makaamaan.
• Perpignanin paahtava kuumuus, kasvillisuuden puute (vähän espanjalaiseen tyyliin) ja katalaaninkieliset katukyltit.
• Puro, jossa kävin uimassa odotellessani Perpignanissa bussia. Juna ylitti sen siltaa pitkin lähestyessään asemaa, ja kävelin takaisin purolle.
• Se, että bussi oli noin 3,5 tuntia myöhässä ja tieto siitä tuli kun bussin suunniteltuun lähtöön oli 5 minuuttia aikaa.

Bussista ja Barcelonasta:

• Hieno vuoristoreitti, tehokkaat moottoritiet. Mukavaa katsella ikkunoista.
• Bussissakin oli kuuma.
• Barcelonassa on ihanan paljon vegaanista ruokaa.
