I mentioned that the ferry prices are pretty random. That's because of many factors. First, they of course want the ships full of people; so they try to sell cheap tickets to the boats that are in the danger of going at less than full capacity (at least before Corona times). There's competition, so they sometimes compete with cruise programmes, sometimes with prices, and sometimes with addon services.
But the most important reason is probably that the boat companies don't really make their money out of the tickets. They make their money from customers spending on the boats. Which reminds me of an important point - if you want to make the cheapest boat trip, bring your own drinks (especially water!) with you. If you don't want to drink alcohol, coffee or tea on the boat, you'll have a hard time of keeping hydrated and it's a bit expensive. But drinks are not the only kind of addon service on the ships. There are pools, casinos, and the like.
One proof of this is that both "traditional" ferry companies (Viking and Tallink Silja) offer free tickets if you buy enough from tax free shops on the ship. Some people have so many of these free tickets that they are selling them on ebay or giving them out to friends.
If you want to get cheap tickets for the ferries, you'll need to (1) check all the different trip providers (and both the Finnish and Swedish sites), (2) be flexible to switch the trip a couple of days back or forth to get a lower price, (3) look for bargains such as extra cheap cruise packages, and (4) check the sites again at some point if you didn't find anything cheap on the first go. That said, usually the tickets get more expensive all the time, but sometimes they make a bargain for some upcoming departures and then you get the same thing for much cheaper.
Mainitsin, että liput ovat aika arvaamattoman hintaisia. Siihen on monta syytä. Ensinnäkin laivat tietysti halutaan täyteen, joten jos laiva on vaarassa jäädä tyhjäksi, siihen myydään halvempia lippuja (näin ainakin ennen korona-aikaa). Laivayhtiöiden välillä on kilpailua, jota joskus käydään risteilyohjelmalla, joskus hinnalla, joskus lisäpalveluilla.
Mutta tärkein syy lienee se, että liput eivät oikeastaan ole varustamoiden tärkein tulonlähde. Enemmän rahaa ne saavat ihmisten ostoksista laivalla. Se muistuttaakin yhdestä tärkeästä jutusta - jos haluat matkustaa laivalla halvalla, ota omat juomat mukaan (varsinkin vesi). Jos laivalla ei halua juoda alkoholia, teetä tai kahvia, tulee nestetasapainosta huolehtiminen vaikeaksi ja vähän kalliiksi. Mutta juomat eivät ole ainoa laivalla oleva lisäpalvelu, josta yhtiöt saavat rahaa. Niissä on lisäksi kylpylöitä, kasinoita ja niin edelleen.
Yksi osoitus siitä, miten tärkeitä nämä lisätienestit ovat laivayhtiöille, on ilmaisliput joita molemmat "perinteiset" varustamot (Viking ja Tallink Silja) jakelevat ihmisille jotka ovat tehneet tarpeeksi isoja tax free -ostoksia. Joillakuilla on niin paljon näitä ilmaislippuja, että he myyvät niitä ebayssa tai jakelevat kavereilleen.
Jos haluat halpoja laivalippuja, pitää (1) tarkistaa kaikkien laivayhtiöiden sivuilta (sekä suomen- että ruotsinkielisiltä), (2) suostua muuttamaan matkan ajankohtaa päivällä tai parilla alemman hinnan saamiseksi, (3) tarkistaa tarjoukset kuten halvat risteilypaketit ja (4) katsoa uudestaan myöhemmin jos halpoja lippuja ei löytynyt heti. Tosin yleensä lippujen hinnat vain nousevat nousemistaan, mutta joskus tietyistä lähdöistä tehdään joku tarjous ja sitten saman matkan saakin paljon halvemmalla.
