Now is a good time to tell why I wanted to write a short blog about this business trip.
The infrastructure for business travel is mostly based on planes. Of course planes are fast and go to almost every place, but also, they have a huge network of sellers, resellers and booking agencies. Travelling by plane means that your trip will be fast and efficient but not very comfortable and certainly lacking in any real connection to the places you travel to. Sometimes you can make the whole trip in a plane-taxi-hotel bubble that looks almost the same everywhere around the globe.
In modern (or postmodern) times, the luxury is taking it slowly. While it's not always possible to do business travel slowly, I think one should seize every opportunity that presents itself. For me, the actual travelling is usually one of the best parts of the trip. The slower one can do it, the more opportunities there will be to look around, and the more places one will be able to see.
The night train renaissance of Europe adds its own cool spice to the mix. The possibility to avoid hotels and their costs on the travel plan is outright compelling. Not only are night trains usually cheaper than hotels, they are often also cheaper than their daytime counterparts. What's better than to sleep the night well and wake up in a new city?
My employer Aiven is arranging a company come-together in Barcelona. In many of my earlier workplaces, the company policies have made it basically impossible to travel in a slow and convoluted way. Of course I'm still restricted by the expenses, but it's actually not all that expensive to travel through Europe by train. Aiven made the very wise policy decision to allow employees to organise their own trips within sensible expense limits. I'm very grateful for that.
This travel is composed of connections some of which I know very well and some of which are totally unknown to me before this trip. I'm very excited to see how it turns out.
Some people have expressed surprise with my mode of travel, so I wanted to make this blog to show how it actually makes perfect sense and what you need to do to arrange your work trips in the same way.
Nyt lienee hyvä aika kertoa, miksi halusin tehdä lyhyen blogin tästä työmatkasta.
Työmatkojen tämänhetkinen järjestely rakentuu käytännössä kokonaan lentokoneiden varaan. Ne ovat toki nopeita ja niillä pääsee joka paikkaan, mutta sen lisäksi lentokoneiden käytössä auttaa valtava myyjien, jälleenmyyjien ja matkatoimistojen verkosto. Lentokoneella matkustaminen on hopeaa ja tehokasta, muttei kovinkaan mukavaa. Siinä on myös vaikeaa saada minkäänlaista yhteyttä paikkoihin, joihin matkustaa. Koko matka saattaa olla lentokoneiden, taksien ja hotellien kuplassa, joka on ihan samanlainen joka puolella maailmaa.
Nykyaikana luksus on sitä, että saa tehdä asiat hitaasti. Työmatkoissa se ei ole aina mahdollista, mutta jos tilaisuus hitaaseen työmatkaan on olemassa, siihen kannattaa ehdottomasti tarttua. Minusta varsinainen matkanteko on melkein parasta matkustuksessa. Mitä hitaammin sen tekee, sitä enemmän saa katsella ympärilleen, ja sitä useampia paikkoja saa nähdä.
Yöjunien uusi nousu Euroopassa tuo soppaan jännittävän uuden vivahteen. On hyvin houkuttelevaa, että voi välttää hotellit kustannuksineen. Yöjunat ovat, paitsi hotelleja, usein myös vastaavia päiväjunia halvempia. Mikä olisikaan parempi kuin nukkua yönsä hyvin ja herätä seuraavassa kaupungissa?
Työnantajani Aiven järjestää koko firman tapaamisen Barcelonassa. Aiemmissa työpaikoissani firmakäytännöt ovat käytännössä estäneet minkäänlaisen hitaan ja monimutkaisen matkustamisen. Täälläkin minulla on kuluille yläraja, mutta itse asiassa junamatka Euroopan läpi ei ole tavattoman kallis. Aiven päätti viisaasti, että työntekijät voivat halutessaan järjestää matkansa omatoimisesti, kunhan se pysyy järkevissä rajoissa. Olen tästä hyvin kiitollinen.

Jotkut ovat ihmetelleet, miksi oikein haluan matkustaa tällä tavoin, joten ajattelin että kirjoitetaanpa blogi niin ihmiset näkevät että tämähän on täysin järkevää. Samalla yritän vähän neuvoa, miten saat tehdyksi matkasi samalla tavalla.
